Experience

Hello there! I am an experienced teacher who has taught English and Latin in both private and public charter schools in the metro Boston area to both boys and girls. I primarily taught middle school, but I have some experience with both younger and older students as well. My teaching philosophy is rooted in an understanding that learning does not come from memorization or relentless drills -- what learning is, at its core, is the practice of connecting the new material to knowledge the student already has. Practice and hard work are critical to this process, of course, but the exercises must be used to reinforce that neural link, not to generate it. In my experience, many teachers do not understand this distinction, and the result is a classroom full of frustrated students. I taught Latin for 3 years. I have taught from the Jenney, Ecce Romani, and Cambridge programs. I am especially good with Latin I and have taught the subject to students in grades 5-9. My Latin training has made me an excellent grammarian. I recognize that English is, as languages go, an inconsistent mess, so I know to employ different methodologies at different times to help make sense of it. I received a score of 167 out of a possible 170 on the verbal section of the GRE. I can assist with both substantive explanations and study habits. In addition to the GRE, I have also successfully passed the bar exam, so I know a thing or two about time management and working through the psychological drain that comes along with studying at length for a high-stakes examination. It *is* doable, and I can help. I am an avid photographer. Though I am self-taught, I do manage a small photography business on the side. My love of teaching and love of photography enable me to explain both the technical and artistic parts of photography, and with a smile on my face. I can also help out with photo editing (I know Aperture very well but am making the switch over to Lightroom). I am also quite familiar with Photoshop. If you live around D.C. and you or your kids need help with the GRE, English, Latin, or photography, I encourage you to reach out to me. I am a dedicated educator who has the experience to help you achieve your goals.
